Commissary Prep Cook for Events

Founded in 1980, Catering by Michaels is a full-service catering and events company based in Morton Grove, Illinois. We support events across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, producing everything from weddings and corporate events to large-scale festivals and private celebrations.

Why This Role Matters

As a Prep Cook, you are responsible for the early stages of production that set the tone for the entire event. Accuracy, efficiency, and consistency at this level are critical to the success of the kitchen and the overall client experience.

This is a fast-paced environment where preparation and teamwork directly impact execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, measuring, and cooking according to recipes
• Support production of appetizers, salads, entrees, and sides for large-scale catering menus
• Work closely with our Sous Chefs to ensure consistency and quality across all items
• Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation in compliance with food safety standards
• Assist in preparing orders for transport to events across Chicago
• Collaborate with kitchen staff to meet production timelines in a high-volume environment
• Take the opportunity to work at events for extra hours

Qualifications

• Previous prep cook, line cook, or kitchen experience preferred
• Strong knife skills and ability to follow recipes in English accurately
• Ability to multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced kitchen
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
• Team-oriented mindset with a positive and reliable attitude
• Flexible availability including weekends and holidays
• Spanish language skills are a plus (Hablamos español)

Work Environment

This role is based in our Morton Grove commissary kitchen and supports catering events throughout Chicago. The environment is fast-paced and production-driven, with increased volume during peak seasons. The ability to stay focused and organized is essential.
