Job Description

A part-time position is available for the 2026–2027 school yearat The Buckley School, an all boys school located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, for an exceptional After School Program Assistant Teacher who genuinely loves working and playing with kindergarten-grade 6 children.

The position begins September 14, 2026, with a few meeting and orientation days scheduled for late August. Program Information

  • Monday - Thursday: 2:00 - 6:00 PM
  • Friday: 2:00 - 5:00 PM
  • Start Date: September 14, 2026 with a few meeting and orientation days scheduled for late August.
  • End Date: June 8, 2027 (potential for renewal the following school year)
  • Compensation: $25-30/hour, depending on education level and experience

Position Summary

Our Assistant Teacher team is a vital part of Buckley’s awesome, activity-based After School program. Whether working directly with students, colleagues, or in supportive administrative/logistics roles, you’ll play an important part in ensuring that each afternoon runs smoothly for the approximately 160 boys who join our program weekly .

Working closely with the Director of After School and Auxiliary Programs, Assistant Teachers help deliver a high-quality experience for students and families. Our After School program complements and enhances the academic day by offering enrichment classes in sports, STEM, arts, and more-all grounded in Buckley’s strong community standards and Code of Conduct. Experienced Assistant Teachers may have the opportunity down the line to sub during the academic day or design and lead an enrichment class, with additional pay for these roles.

In addition to supporting our After School enrichment classes, Assistant Teachers run our daily Drop-In program for students not enrolled in an enrichment class.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provide stellar supervision, student support and behavioral management to ensure the safety and needs of the children are being met at all times
  • Plan and lead thoughtful, age-appropriate activities and facilitate free play
  • Assist students with homework as needed
  • Assist lead teachers during enrichment classes
  • Set up and clean up classrooms and shared spaces, may include moving classroom furniture and other program materials
  • Lead snack time, take attendance, lead dismissal
  • Escort students between classrooms and our three buildings
  • Communicate behavioral, medical, and other student concerns to the Director (who will typically handle parent communications)
  • Contribute to the production of our monthly After School digital and video newsletters
  • Follow Buckley’s dress code and community expectations
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned by the Director

Qualifications:

  • High School Degree required, College Degree or higher is preferred, as is a degree in education, child development, or a related field.
  • A passion for working with children and experience in a school, camp, daycare, babysitting, or similar setting (parenting experience counts too!) We love former or retired teachers who miss being with children!
  • A team player with a friendly, positive, can-do attitude
  • Polite, professional demeanor in all interactions with students, colleagues, and families
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to keep calm, adapt quickly, and think on your feet in a lively, fast-paced environment
  • Able to take direction and incorporate feedback
  • Must be dependable, organized, flexible, patient—and genuinely enjoy spending time with children!
